Rippled Wall (graded V4 6b) at Bonehill

Thanks to the British Mountaineering Council, Bonehill Down now benefits from improved parking.

Three parking spaces close to Bonehill Rocks had become badly eroded with deep gulleys.  These have been resurfaced under the BMC’s Mend Our Mountains campaign.  This ambitious campaign aims to raise £1,000,000 to finance a wide range of vital path repair projects within Britains 15 National Parks.

Bonehill Down attracts both walkers and climbers alike.  The Rocks are reputed to offer some of the best Bouldering problems on Dartmoor for all ages and abilities.  If Bouldering is your thing, there’s a really good article written by David Henderson describing many of the challenges at Bonehill Rocks.

Of course, if you’re staying at our Dartmoor holiday cottage, Lustleigh Cleave is virtually on the doorstep and offers an excellent selection of Bouldering problems at The Nutcrackers, Harton Chest and Raven’s Tor.

Alternatively, for keen walkers there are fantastic views of Dartmoor.  The view of Widecomeb-in-the-moor is just majestic.

This summer 81 Otter and cub statues were placed around Dartmoor to form the Moor Otters Arts Trail to raise money to help with conservation work in the National Park. Each statue was uniquely decorated by artists and thousands of “Otter Spotters” took to the different trails to find the 81 Otter and cub statues.

One statue collected an impressive £300 in its donation box. Now with the Moor Otters Arts Trail drawing to a close these fine Dartmoor Otter statues can raise even more.

Each one needs to find a forever home so they’ve put themselves up for auction this Friday and Saturday. If you feel you could give one a good home why not buy a Dartmoor Otter

A thirty minute drive from Three Pound Cottage lies Powderham Castle, a fortified manor house in a beautiful setting beside the Exe estuary and family home to the Earl of Devon. It’s pretty much a real life Downton Abbey open to the public between April and October.

With over 600 years of history, castle tours, fabulous grounds and gardens within an ancient deer park, it’s a lovely place to visit whether you’re staying at our Dartmoor holiday cottage or not.

This weekend see’s the return of their Food Festival giving even more of an appetite for a visit. This year will be the 10th year of the Festival so you can be sure it will be better than ever. It runs on both the 2nd and 3rd of October starting at 10am.

Three Pound Cottage would like to say a HUGE thank you to all the volunteers that make up Dartmoor Search & Rescue.

When people think of them, it’s usually images of helping people in trouble on Dartmoor by stretchering them down to safety. They also play a big part in the Dartmoor community and are often not given the praise and admiration they deserve. Last week they showed this tremendously by stretchering Gilby Taylor up to the top of Belstone Tor so he could enjoy the view. This all makes sense when you learn Gilby is reliant on wheelchair and until that day had only enjoyed the view of Belstone Tor from his garden. This lovely act of kindness was recorded by BBC Spotlight and is available to watch by clicking on this link.

We were absolutely thrilled when talented artist Mei Yim Low sent us a photo of her painting of the Primrose Tea Room as viewed from the front bedroom window of Three Pound Cottage.

The 2021 Devon County Show is going ahead. This will be the 125th Show and promises to be jam packed. The show will start on the 2nd July and runs for 3 days.

As well as all the events held in the main arena there will be:

• the biggest food fair in Devon;
• the usual craft and gardens section including homebaking competitions;
• a hands on look & learn area for the kids;
• horses, ponies and donkeys;
• steam engines, and so much more.

The show, held at Westpoint in Clyst St Mary, is only a 30 minute drive from our dartmoor holiday cottage in Lustleigh. Tickets for the show are on sale now and you’ll save roughly 13% by purchasing them in advance.

It was with a bit of trepidation that Michaela & Brian reopened the door of Three Pound Cottage following the easing of travel restrictions back in April. Would guests continue to enjoy holidaying on Dartmoor whilst Covid measures remain in place? Would it still feel like home from home? It seems they had nothing to worry about……………..

Too busy!

Through the centuries there have been several London Bridges. The most famous one (you know the one, sold to an American in the 60’s and shipped to Arizona) was built from Dartmoor Granite.

It’s construction started in 1825 and took 6 years to complete.  By 1900, London Bridge had become so busy with traffic and pedestrians something needed to be done.

Huge Granite Corbels

In 1903 a Dartmoor Quarry was commissioned to extract over 1,500 tonnes of granite to make large Corbels to widen the bridge.

About 12 of these Corbels can be found on Dartmoor lying on the remains of the railway track just outside Swell Tor Quarry.  Were they seconds or just surplus to requirements?  Either way they make for an incredible sight with each measuring about 3m by 1m.  Just another one of the many amazing things you stumble across when venturing out for a ramble on Dartmoor whilst staying at our Dartmoor Holiday Cottage in Lustleigh

Main Car Park at Haytor

Good news for those with electric cars wanting to explore Dartmoor.  The National Park Authority have installed a twin 7kw rapid charging point in the main car park for Haytor.

Haytor is Dartmoor’s most iconic tor, and only 5 miles from our Dartmoor Holiday Cottage.  It is popular with locals and tourists alike.  Indeed no holiday to Devon would be complete without a walk up Haytor.
